Thalberg, who had long suffered from health problems, died of pneumonia, The Times Katharine was born in 1935 in Santa Monica, California to film actress, Norma Shearer and film producer, Irving Thalberg. She had one brother, Irving, Jr., a philosophy professor, who lived part-time in Aspen for many decades. Katharine attended Vassar College, Stanford University and graduated from UCLA with honors. She spoke fluent French. Irving Thalberg spent more than a week rehearsing the actors—even recording their rehearsals—so that the radio audience would hear a flawless performance. This was part of his quest for perfection.
