Scripta Materialia is a peer-reviewed scientific journal. It is the letters section of Acta Materialia and covers novel properties, or substantially improved properties of materials. Specific materials discussed are metals, ceramics and semiconductors at all length scales, and published research endeavors explore the functional or mechanical behavior of these materials.

The journal also publishes Viewpoint Sets, which are a collection of invited short articles focused on topics of current interest within the scope of the journal and coordinated by invited guest editors. Materialia accepts direct submissions as well as manuscripts transferred from the sister journals. This offers an efficient and flexible route for the publication of articles reporting high quality research which did not find a home in the other journals of the Acta Materialia Inc. family, for example on the grounds of novelty or fit.
